L'histoire de Mega Man Battle Network se déroule dans le monde futuriste interconnecté de la Net Society, qui dépend de programmes informatiques connus sous le nom de Network Navigators (ou NetNavi en abrégé). Ils gèrent tout, du grille-pain au réseau électrique de la ville. Si cette technologie propose toutes sortes de commodités, elle a également importé une vague de cybercriminalité qui sévit à tous les niveaux de la société. Dans les jeux proposés, les joueurs incarnent Lan Hikari en utilisant leur terminal personnel et son NetNavi, MegaMan.EXE, pour affronter les coupables de ces cybercrimes. Les joueurs contrôlent MegaMan.EXE dans son exploration du réseau, ses affrontement stratégiques et son utilisation des puces de combat pour acquérir des capacités dévastatrices capables de supprimer les virus les plus sinistres.
Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection propose des filtres haute résolution optionnels qui permettent aux joueurs de profiter de visuels plus lissés et moins pixellisés. Les joueurs peuvent activer ou désactiver les filtres à tout moment s'ils préfèrent profiter des images originales des jeux Battle Network. Ils pourront également accéder à plus de 1 000 éléments de conception, de croquis de personnages et d'illustrations officielles inédites dans la Galerie de la collection. La section "Mystery Data" contiendra des illustrations exclusives d'événements passés et des images de produits d’époques sous licence Mega Man™. Enfin, les joueurs pourront apprécier les thèmes musicaux grâce au lecteur audio proposant plus de 180 pistes issues des dix jeux.
